RESUMO

Despite the modern association of ancient Amazons and Diana's huntresses with lesbianism, scholarly accounts of these groups as they appear in ancient Greek and Roman literature have rarely adverted to any hints of homoeroticism. This article re-examines several narratives concerning Amazons and huntresses in Latin literature (including Camilla in Vergil's Aeneid and Phaedra in Seneca's eponymous tragedy) from the perspective of queer kinship and female homosociality, demonstrating the ways in which these characters subvert traditional norms of kinship and femininity, replacing patriarchal control with female sodality, often imaged as a "sister" relationship. It suggests that, even if we do not interpret these intense homosocial bonds as erotic, we can nonetheless perceive a more radical rejection of social norms that transcends genital sexuality and merits the label of "queerness", insofar as queerness can be defined as a resistance to normativity.

RESUMO

Arantxa Echevarría's film Carmen y Lola (2018) takes a groundbreaking new approach to intersectionality and lesbian identity contextualizing a lesbian coming-of-age-story and its multicultural background and context. Owing to the colonial gaze and the outsider's perspective in the story telling, the film makes some major missteps in its representation of the Romani community in Spain. But nonetheless, the intersectional presentation is groundbreaking in terms of representation of lesbian diversity and experiences, since it portrays the lesbian subject as a triple minority: woman, lesbian, and Roma - a minority ethnic group still discriminated against in Spain. The story of two female Roma adolescents coming to terms with their mutual homoerotic desire intertwines with the marginality of their community and a conservative and homophobic environment in which lesbianism does not find a space. I argue that Echevarría's film explores the topics of minorities both in terms of ethnicity and sexual orientation. The director aims to represent this otherness as a marginalized and decentered subjectivity that intersects with other axes of discrimination. It is from this marginal position that the film explores the forms of resistance against the control of the lesbian body that women directors are carrying out in Spanish cinema.

RESUMO

Katharine B. Davis was an important progressive-era figure, a pioneering professional, an innovative penologist, and an iconoclastic sexologist. Although scholars have long been aware of Davis's tolerant attitude toward same-sex relationships at the New York State Female Reformatory at Bedford Hills, where she was Superintendent from 1901 to 1913, and her open discussion of same-sex attraction in her study of "normal" women's sexuality, published in 1929, little has been known about Davis's personal life. Thus, it was a feminist biographer's dream come true to gain access to what Davis called her "autobiographical biography," the never-finished, never-published, story of her life. Or so I thought. As it turns out, my quest to understand Davis's personal life and how it informed her professional trajectory has been a bit more complicated.

RESUMO

Same-sex attraction is associated with a direct reproductive cost, i.e., a reduced number of biological children. The current study aimed to assess this cost for different forms of sexual attraction (i.e., only attracted to opposite sex, mostly attracted to opposite sex, equally attracted to both sexes, mostly attracted to same-sex, only attracted to same-sex), using two large nationally representative datasets (N = 15,208) from the USA. The results indicated that same-sex attraction was associated with substantial loss in direct reproductive output. More specifically, significant differences between the different types of same-sex attraction were found: Exclusive and mostly homosexual orientation identities were associated with the highest direct reproductive cost, while mostly attracted to opposite sex orientation and bisexuality identities were associated with lower direct reproductive costs. In addition, bisexual women did not differ significantly from exclusively heterosexual women in terms of their reproductive output. The implications of these findings for the evolutionary origins of same-sex attraction are further discussed.

RESUMO

This article addresses current tensions around identity and spatial boundaries within Montreal's lesbian and sexual diversity networks, underlining generational and linguistic questions framing identity politics. Based on phenomenological walking interviews (Kusenbach, 2003; Collie, 2013) with 21 variously identified women in Montreal, I posit the participants' situated experiences as valuable horizons of perception to understand sociocultural transformations (Lee, 2015; Weiss et al., 2019). For the purpose of this piece, I look at political lesbianism's history in Montreal from the 1970s to today through the lens of two self-identified political lesbians, exploring what it means politically for once-exclusive "lesbian-only" or "women-only" spaces to move forward in a context of shifting inclusions within lesbo-queer communities.

The objective of this work was to know the characteristics of affective-sexual relationships between women. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, using a semi-structured interview as an instrument. The participants were five women, aged between 25 to 37 years, who have established an affective-sexual partnership with another woman, in the form of cohabitation for at least one year. The qualitative analysis of phenomenological inspiration identified particularities and convergent points in the reported experiences. The data indicate that the life trajectory of these women is marked by violence, while the constitution of a new family is permeated by intense affection, companionship and partnership. Knowing the relationships between women is important to demystify the stigmas that are still perpetuated in the form of violence against lesbians and bisexual women. It is pointed out that for future research it is interesting to expand the age range of the participants, as well as to use social class and race markers.

(AU)

The objective of the article is to identify the characteristics of homosexuality constructed by the psychological science of Latin America, Spain and Portugal. We conducted a Content Analysis and an Argumentative Analysis of 420 scientific articles published in those regions. The results show that the psychology of these regions has built a) a pathologized, vulnerable and victimized population and sexuality; b) a risky and sexualized male population, and an invisible female population; c) a population partially included in the rights but sociocultural and generally excluded; d) a "disabled" and painful population and sexuality, and; e) the binary dichotomy of sex / gender. With this work we problematize the constituted homosexuality through scientific practices, understanding that they are capable of creating realities. As a discussion, we propose that scientific discourses can go from the discourses which define the sexual norms to the discourses of resistance. (AU)

Abstract This case study aimed to analyze the access to parenthood and the adoption process by a lesbian couple. A semi-structured interview and a questionnaire were used with both women, and the data were subjected to thematic analysis. The findings reveal that the adoption was marked by two stages: the couple's struggle to assert the legitimacy of their desire and their right to become mothers, and the surprise at how the process unfolded. From the start, custody was awarded as a definitive decision, which is an unusual ruling in cases of adoption, but not in circumstances involving disabled children. The couple had to deal with prejudice and discrimination from professionals but were able to overcome such challenges due to their persistence and the strong bond they established with the vulnerable child.

RESUMO

This essay serves as a close reading of psychiatrist Fredric Wertham's 1950s descriptions and critiques of female comics characters. I draw on archival sources as well as relevant texts in the study of gender and sexuality. Additionally, I integrate ideas from two of his close associates, folklorist Gershon Legman and psychiatrist Hilde Mosse, whose contributions to Seduction of the Innocent are woven-often invisibly-throughout that text. The character of Wonder Woman serves as a touchstone, but other provocative female figures that Wertham found objectionable in mid-twentieth-century comics accompany her. My goal is to illuminate Wertham's understanding of what he viewed as the "regressive formula of perversity" enacted through women's representations in comics, particularly those female characters who played active roles. Although not all of these concerns are tied to lesbian identity, they do all touch on broader notions of queerness vis-à-vis deviant sexual and gender expression.

RESUMO

This essay provides a brief overview of some recent Indian and Bangladeshi comics and graphic novels, whether print-based or online, which feature queer female characters. The essay contextualizes these texts with respect to the anti-LGBTQ+ legal climate in South Asian countries, but also places them within a larger trajectory of literary representations of queer (female) love in the Indian subcontinent. The texts under examination range from print graphic novels and indie comics anthologies in India to comic strips brought out by queer activists working for LGBTQ+education and advocacy in Bangladesh. Taken together, they offer diverse portrayals of female-centric love and desire that challenge hetero-patriarchal representations of desi women.

RESUMO

Despite a growing number of female same-gender (FSG) relationships, couples-based research and interventions have focused primarily on mixed-gender couples. Consequently, research has applied a heteronormative lens to understanding some relationship factors, including sexuality. The current study sought to provide descriptive data regarding frequency and conceptualizations of sex across partners in FSG relationships, as well as to analyze how relationship factors are associated with sexual satisfaction in this population. Participants (N = 206) were 103 adult FSG couples who had been together for at least 2 months. Individuals provided self-report data on how they conceptualized sex, and actor-partner models were utilized to assess relationship factors associated with sexual satisfaction. Findings indicated that women in FSG relationships hold broad definitions of sex, with the majority of behaviors conceptualized as sex, including acts that involved partnered genital touching. In dyadic actor-partner models, sexual satisfaction was predicted by several factors including sexual frequency, emotional intimacy, and sexual intimacy. Unexpectedly, higher desired sexual frequency was associated with lower sexual satisfaction; however, this finding only emerged after controlling for actual sexual frequency, suggesting that discrepancies between desired and actual sex frequency may be important for FSG couples. Implications for clinical practice with FSG couples are explored, including a strength-based focus on broad conceptualizations of sex within this population and targeting relationship factors associated with sexual satisfaction.

Abstract The present study aim understand the experiences of lesbians widows according to an existential-phenomenological perspective. Two phenomenological open-end interviews were conducted with the following starter question: "How was it for you to lose your wife?". The interviews were analyzed according to the Giorgi's phenomenological method. Data were grouped into the following essential constituents which describe the structure of the homosexual female widowhood experience: Discrimination, Loss of life-world's meaning, Solitude, Changes in mood and health, Restructuring routine, Changes in affective life's project, Lack of recognition of being a couple, Suffering invisibility, Being silenced, Limitation of pain's expression, Support network, Rejected or accepted by the families, Need to look for their rights and Need for self-respect and self-recognition as lesbian. The results indicate mental suffering in homosexual widowhood due to the lack of social recognition and lack of legitimacy of lesbian couples' affection and loss. We conclude that a structured support network and structured health care are essential to minimize suffering in lesbian widowhood and to construct new meanings in bereavement.

Lesbian women engage in more hazardous drinking than heterosexual women yet we know relatively little about what explains this disparity. In the present study, race, socioeconomic status, minority stress, general psychological processes and distress were examined as pathways to hazardous drinking among young (18-35 years) Black and non-Hispanic White lesbian women. We used the psychological mediation framework adaptation of minority stress theory and the reserve capacity model as theoretical underpinnings of the conceptual model in the current study. Self-identified lesbian participants (N= 867) completed a one-time online survey that assessed race, socioeconomic status, perceived sexual minority discrimination, proximal minority stress (concealment, internalized homophobia, lack of connection to lesbian community), rumination, social isolation, psychological distress, drinking to cope, and hazardous drinking. Cross-sectional results demonstrated that being Black was associated with hazardous drinking via sequential mediators of rumination, psychological distress, and drinking to cope. Socioeconomic status was associated with hazardous drinking via sequential mediators of sexual minority discrimination, proximal minority stress, rumination, social isolation, psychological distress, and drinking to cope. Understanding these pathways can aid researchers and clinicians studying and working with lesbians who are at risk for hazardous drinking.

RESUMO

This article analyzes the inquisitorial trial of Maria Duran, a Catalan novice in the Dominican convent of Nossa Senhora do Paraíso in Portugal. Maria Duran was arrested by the Inquisition in 1741 and, after a lengthy trial, condemned in 1744 to a public lashing and exile. She was suspected of having made a pact with the Devil and was accused by many female witnesses of possessing a "secret penis" that she had allegedly used in her amorous relations with fellow nuns and novices. Her voluminous trial dossier offers a rare and fascinating documentary insight into the often extreme reactions that female homosexuality provoked from both men and women in early modern Portugal. Using the evidence offered by the 18th-century trial of Maria Duran, this article highlights female bewilderment when faced with female-on-female sexual violence and the difficulty that men (in this case, churchmen) had coming to terms with the existence of female homosexuality. It also discusses the case in light of the acts/identity debate among historians of the history of sexuality.

RESUMO

This study examined a pathway to heterosexual women's experience of anger and anxiety in response to lesbian interactions. Participants were 149 18-30 year old heterosexual female undergraduates (56% African American) from a southeastern United States university. Participants completed measures of female gender role beliefs, sexual prejudice, and state affect, viewed a video depicting relationship behavior between a female-female or male-female dyad, and again completed a measure of state affect. Results indicated that traditional beliefs about women were associated with higher levels of sexual prejudice toward lesbians. In turn, higher levels of sexual prejudice predicted increased anger (not anxiety) in response to the female-female, but not the male-female, dyad. Findings elucidate determinants of heterosexual women's anger, and potentially aggression, toward lesbians.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT This article explores the work of novelist Griselda Gambaro as a lesbian discourse that counters the prevailing patriarchal discourse of the Latin American dictatorships. Gambaro's work is placed in the context of other Latin American "lesbian" texts that also challenge the political status quo by providing deviant models of female sexuality.

SUMMARY Frances Hodgkins was one of a number of expatriate New Zealanders during the early twentieth century who lived in Britain or Europe, where it was easier to find supportive friendship circles for their lives as artists or as people attracted to their own sex. In this article, I explore the primacy of women in Hodgkins' life and read this as lesbian and argue that many of these relationships were sexual, from the evidence of her letters, which suggest that she moved in lesbian worlds of work and friendship. I also discuss the financial and emotional support given by her male homosexual as well as her lesbian friends who made her life as an artist possible.
